The World Video Game Hall of Fame in Rochester NY announced the new nominees for 2017 induction. The list includes stalwarts like Halo and Mortal Kombat as well as more eye-raising inclusions like Wii Sports.
All of the nominees (full list below) have had an “undeniable impact on the world of gaming and popular culture,” The HoF said in a statement. Some of 2017’s nominees are 2016 contenders that did not make the cut, such as Tomb Raider and Street Fighter II.
Last years they inducted 6 games into the hall: Grand Theft Auto III, The Legend of Zelda, The Oregon Trail, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Space Invaders.
Donkey Kong may very well be the reason Nintendo still exists outside of Japan. The struggling American arm of the Japanese company was one dud away from going under when cabinets for Radar Scope began to arrive. It was a dud, so they asked Nintendo of Japan to design a new game for the same cabinets, quickly!
The rest is history, the creation of Mario (Jumpman) and the best earning arcade cabinet Nintendo would ever see.
